The 2018 Sac County Fair Queen is inviting area residents to the fairgrounds this weekend to learn more about protecting themselves. Fair Queen, Emily Scott, says she first came up with the idea to help people in her home county while attending the State Fair Queen Contest this summer.
She adds those recent attacks have many residents feeling uneasy in places that they previously considered to be safe. Scott says many people might feel better if they knew they could handle themselves and laid the plans for a one-hour class this weekend.
The class will be led by Steve Pudenz, a martial arts instructor from Carroll. He will focus on how to identify potential threats and simple methods to deter an attacker. Scott says she did not want to limit the class to any specific gender or age group, so the only limitation is that participants be at least seven years old. There is no need to register prior to the event and there is no cost to attend. Scott just asks that participants arrive on time, wear workout clothes and be ready to learn.
