Two Iowa Students Receive Scholarships For Black History Month Essays

Two Iowa students are among the 30 who have been selected winners of the annual “Riding Forward Scholarship Essay Contest,” through Regions Bank. For the past six years, the contest has celebrated Black History month by allowing high school seniors and college students who reside or attend college in their 15-state service area to submit an entry detailing how an African-American has been an inspiration in their lives. More than 7,000 entries were received, with the 30 winners sharing more than $125,000 in scholarship funds. Winning high school seniors will receive $5,000 and college students are awarded $3,500. The high school winner from Iowa is Demarco Saffold of Grinnell, who is planning on attending Grinnell College in the fall. Dallas Ott of Ankeny, who attends Iowa State University (ISU) was awarded the college-level scholarship. To date, the scholarship program has awarded more than $760,000.
