Tips For Staying Safe During Extended Power Outages

With severe winter weather expected this weekend, MidAmerican Energy is offering a number of tips to stay safe in the event of an extended power outage. Before power goes out, be prepared by assembling an emergency kit with flashlights, batteries and food and water for everyone in your household. Keep your vehicle at least half full of fuel to ensure you are able to travel when conditions clear. Clear snow and ice from your natural gas meters to keep your gas supply uninterrupted and operating safely during a storm. Designate a place to go during an extended power outage, and be sure to include elderly neighbors, friends or relatives as part of your plan. If an outage occurs, report the incident immediately to your provider to restore power faster. Unplug as many sensitive appliances as possible to prevent damage and keep the door to the refrigerator or freezer closed as long as possible. By following these tips and staying tuned to your Carroll Broadcasting stations, anybody can handle severe winter weather without problems.
