Since 1999, the state of Iowa has received more than $1.1 billion through a settlement agreement with tobacco companies. The annual payment of over $65 million, to help cover the health-care costs associated with tobacco, was transferred to the state treasury late last month. The Master settlement agreement is an annual payment of nearly $48 million, and since 2008, Iowa has been receiving an additional annual Strategic Contribution Fund payment of more than $17.8 million, bringing the total to over $65.8 million. The agreement created restrictions on the advertising, marketing and promotion of cigarettes in a goal of reducing smoking, particularly youth smoking, in the United States.
