State Fire Marshal Opens Portal For Fireworks Sales Permit Applications

The State Fire Marshal’s office has announce the opening of its online licensing portal to permit the sales of consumer fireworks. This will also allow wholesalers to register electronically so they can provide fireworks to retail sellers. The newly signed law requires individuals and companies selling fireworks to be licensed by the State Fire Marshal, with restrictions on use and regulation of sales the responsibility of city and county officials. Sales are allowed in the state of Iowa in permanent structures from June 1 through July 8 and again on Dec. 10 through Jan. 3. Sales from temporary structures are allowed from June 13 through July 8. Previously, the only legal fireworks in Iowa were novelties, such as sparklers, caps and snakes. Iowa has now joined 43 other states and the District of Columbia in legalizing first and second-class consumer fireworks, which includes roman candles, bottle rockets, firecrackers and ground spinners. Display fireworks/pyrotechnics still require licensed operators to discharge. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) regulates this category of fireworks. The link is available on the State Fire Marshal’s website.
