South Central Calhoun Gets One More Day, Classes Start Thursday, Aug. 24

South Central Calhoun is one of only a couple of schools in our area that will be starting classes on Thursday of next week, Aug. 24. Superintendent, Jeff Kruse, says in the summers of 2015 and 2016 the district was busy doing a lot of work on the school structure in Lake City after the 2015 Mother’s Day weekend tornado. This year, there has been no real changes to any of the structures themselves, but some grounds improvements were started over the break with a parking lot project in Lake City.

He says the middle school building in Rockwell City has seen some work done on the auditorium. They have replaced the front and back curtains on the stage and will be installing new stage flooring. The board is looking at some facility improvements and they have met with an architectural firm about updates in all three buildings. Kruse says some details are being fleshed out on what needs to be done at the elementary school in Rockwell City.

When it comes to what returning students will see next Thursday inside the classrooms, Kruse says they are sticking with the solid programs they have in place and will continue to utilize their strengths in a traditional style of educating their students.

He adds that even though the kids may be grumbling and complaining a little about the end of their summer break, he is confident that they feel pretty much the same way he does about the first bell ringing in a new year.

South Central Calhoun had a number of staff members opt for early retirement at the end of last year, so Kruse says they are welcoming two to three new teachers in each of the three buildings, and he is looking forward to working with them and having them become members of the South Central family. A listing of the new staff members can be found here. Elementary and middle school open houses will be held from 5 p.m. to 6:15 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 23 in Rockwell City with a full day of classes scheduled for Thursday.
