Social Media Flares Up Before And After Eclipse

The entire country was captivated by the solar eclipse on Monday, with more than 10.9 million mentions on social media by 2:30 p.m. yesterday (Monday) afternoon. Eight point one million of those being done in the 24-hour period around the eclipse. Many other fun facts surrounded the once-in-a-lifetime phenomenon. Bonnie Tyler’s 1983 hit, “Total Eclipse of the Heart,” was mentioned more than 131,000 times online and a clip from the last total solar eclipse on Feb. 26, 1979 was the most viral Tweet with more than 807,000 people engaged. And the celebrity posts gathered a lot of attention with Kim Kardashian’s Instagram photo of her children engaging more than 1.4 million people. Another Instagram post from Miley Cyrus, who said the eclipse was a tool for unity and peace, reached 71.1 million people and engaged with 672,000. And finally, there was Katy Perry, who posted an Instagram joke of fake glasses made of Eclipse gum wrappers that gathered nearly 300,000 views.
