Senator Grassley Calls On Iowa Attorney General For Answers On EpiPen Reimbursements

U.S. Senator, Chuck Grassley, says he still has significant concerns that Iowa may not receive proper reimbursements from EpiPen’s apparent misclassification under the Medicaid Drug Rebate Program. Today (Friday), as chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, Grassley penned a letter to Iowa Attorney General, Tom Miller, voicing these concerns. He says last year’s misclassification may have cost Minnesota more than $4 million and he asked Miller to determine whether Iowans may have similarly overpaid for EpiPens under Medicaid. Miller’s office has been looking into the issue since September 2016, but has not provided an estimate of costs to the state and the taxpayers. “As you are aware, the Inspector General for Health and Human Services estimated that the EpiPen’s misclassification could have cost $1.27 billion,” Grassley wrote to Miller. He went on to say that, “A portion of that involves rebates that would have been paid to the respective states, including Iowa. Accordingly, it must be assumed that some harm has been inflicted on Iowa and your office has a responsibility to ensure that the state and its people receive the correct rebates.”
