Scam Calls Reported In Audubon County Appearing To Originate From Sheriff’s Office On Caller ID

The Audubon County Sheriff’s Office has received reports of a scam circulating which uses a number associated with their office. According to Sheriff Todd Johnson, the scam call appears to fraudulently use the county’s own fax number with the name on caller ID appearing as “Sheriff’s Department”. Scammers use a method called “spoofing” which utilizes electronics to make a call seem like it is coming from a familiar number. Johnson warns these calls are scams and recommends not providing any personal information if a call is suspicious. He adds if they were attempting to make contact with anyone the Sheriff’s Office phone number would appear as “Private Caller” or “Unknown” as their number is blocked. Always be aware of the potential for a call to be a scam. Contact your local law enforcement through their non-emergency number to report any suspicious calls.
