Rainy Start To Harvest Puts Farmers Behind Averages

A rainy start to October has meant less time in the fields for farmers, with the smallest percentage of corn harvested since 2009 at only 13 percent and soybeans at 32 percent, the lowest harvest reporting for this time of year since 1985. The only portion of the state seeing higher averages is in east central Iowa, where farmers are reporting 50 percent of the soybean crop out of the fields. “It looks like the weather could be more agreeable this week and I expect harvest to move very quickly if we do get a run of dry days,” Mike Naig, Iowa Deputy Secretary of Agriculture said after the release of the weekly Iowa Crop Progress and Condition report. For the week ending Oct. 15, there were only two days suitable for fieldwork across Iowa, the second week in a row the state has reported less than three days for farmers to work fields. The little bit of corn that is coming out is rated 61 percent good to excellent while soybeans are reported at 63 percent good to excellent.
