Popular Children’s Toy Contains High Level Of Hazardous Substance

A popular children’s toy that is available in Iowa has been found to contain phthalate, a hazardous substance that is prohibited for sale in the United States and is illegal for use in children’s toys in concentrations over a tenth of a percent. Easy Einstein Balloons by Telebrands are sold nationwide, and a sample taken from a Clive retailer recorded 9.16 percent, over 91 times the legal limit. According to the United States National Institutes of Health, studies have suggested that fetal and childhood exposure to some phthalates may curb normal developing while several other studies consistently report increased risk of allergic disease. The substance has also been linked to cancer. The Easy Einstein Balloons component is especially concerning because it is a PVC retainer used to seal the neck of a water balloon and is a chewing temptation for children.
