One-Of-A-Kind Countywide Educational Programming Gaining State And National Attention

The entire County of Carroll is taking part in the second year of a one-of-a-kind program through a joint effort of all four county libraries, called “Everybody on the Same Page.” The library directors have come together to not only encourage reading, but to bring more educational opportunities to our communities. Manning’s Library Director, Linda Muhlbauer, says this program is not like the ones seen in other communities.

Muhlbauer said that last year’s event focused on Iowa’s Orphan Trains, and it was a huge success with 889 people participating. Those numbers drew the attention of one of the state-based funding agencies.

And they are exceeding expectations with this year’s program on “The Great War,” World War I. Just half way through the two-month program that runs from March 1 through May 1, they have already seen an impact just a little shy of last year’s entire program with 843 people participating. There will be opportunities for more people to attend a special presentation this month that focuses on women during the war. Performer, Pippa White, will be appearing at all four libraries in April. Muhlbauer and Friend of the Carroll Public Library, CJ Niles, say she is back by popular demand from last year and will provide an enthralling presentation that is part theater, part storytelling and part history, titled “Saints, Soldiers and Spies: Women and War.”

White’s free presentations are scheduled for Wednesday, April 19 at 1 p.m. at the Coon Rapids Library and at 7 p.m. at the Carroll Chamber Depot, then on Thursday, April 20, at 1 p.m. at the Manning Zion Lutheran Church and at 6:30 p.m. at the Glidden Public Library. The reading selections, “Bottomland” and the true story of Winnie the Pooh, “Finding Winnie,” are available at all four libraries.
