National School Choice Week Ends On Saturday, And CCSD Superintendent Says Open Enrollments Affect Budgets

Monday, Jan. 23, marked the beginning of National School Choice Week which raised awareness about school choice. Parents in Iowa can choose between traditional public schools, public charter schools, magnet schools, online academies, private schools or home-school for their children’s education. When it comes to choosing between public schools, Carroll Community School District Superintendent, Rob Cordes, says choosing another district affects budgets.

State aid is determined by a count of students called certified enrollment, and it is used in the Iowa School Finance Formula. According to Cordes, the usable money for the district changes..

National School Choice Week ends Saturday, Jan. 28. In parts of Iowa, open enrollment policies allow parents to select the best traditional public school for their children, regardless of the school’s location.
