Local Cities Rushing To Make Decisions On Firework Use Within City Limits

Local cities are rushing to create or amend their ordinances to regulate the sale and use of fireworks in Iowa after Senate File 489 was signed into law earlier this month. Fireworks were previously illegal in the state, but the new law allows for consumers to purchase and light them from June 1 to July 8 and from Dec. 10 to Jan. 3. The law allows for municipalities to add further restrictions on fireworks in addition to the ones required by the state. The Glidden, Coon Rapids and Wall Lake City Councils will all be addressing fireworks in upcoming meetings. Glidden’s first discussion on their regulation takes place early next month on Monday, June 12 at 5:30 p.m. at Glidden City Hall. Coon Rapids’ first meeting on the issue is Monday, June 5 at 5 p.m. in the city offices at 123 South 3rd Avenue. Wall Lake council members met Wednesday evening to hash out their plans for firework regulation. With such a new law, the cities recommend citizens attend these meetings to ensure their opinions are heard on the issue. Carroll Broadcasting will bring you updates on firework restrictions in these communities when official ordinances are in place.
