Large Wastewater Discharge In Lake City Resolved Same Day

A wastewater discharge from a manhole in Lake City reported to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Thursday has already been corrected. The discharge began overnight due to a pump failure which flooded a pumping station. An estimated 15,000 gallons of untreated wastewater flowed into Lake Creek, a tributary of the North Raccoon River. The discharge ended around 1 p.m. once a portable pump arrived to redirect the water to the city lagoon. The DNR is recommending children and pets stay away from the creek for 24 to 48 hours to avoid any potentially contaminated water. They are requesting downstream farmers find alternative sources of drinking water for livestock. The DNR is continuing to monitor the situation and will consider enforcement action if appropriate.
