Lake View City Council Commits Up To $300,000 To Fish Barrier Project

The Lake View City Council is moving forward with a project designed to reduce the undesirable fish population, called rough fish, in Black Hawk Lake by building a fish barrier. The council committed up to $300,000 in funding Monday evening to go towards the structure. A fish barrier works by creating a physical obstruction which prevents certain types of fish from entering specific areas of the lake. City Administrator, Scott Peterson, says they still have a long way to go before the project even gets started.

Peterson says the new barrier comes with a number of benefits, including increased water quality in Black Hawk Lake once it is installed.

A portion of the committed amount comes from Iowa’s State Revolving Fund (SRF) which encourages communities to put an extra emphasis on extra water quality projects. In Lake View’s case, the SRF is tied to the city’s lagoon project, which is slated for completion in 2019. The Black Hawk Lake Protective association has already contributed an additional $10,000 to help support the project.
