Lake City To Follow State Guidelines For the Sale And Use Of Fireworks

The sale and use of fireworks in Iowa during specified times of the year is now legal after the signing of a bill by Gov. Terry Branstad, and the Lake City Council is staying mostly in line with state guidelines to regulate retailers. The law permits municipalities to place restrictions on fireworks. Administrator, Eric Wood, says the use of aerial display shells to sparklers will be allowed to be used, and all that is required is a simple permit to ensure safe sales.

Wood adds that with fireworks now being legal, law enforcement will devote less of their time to tracking down offenders.

Citizens have been fully supportive of the city council’s decision. Wood noted he is yet to hear any negative comments against the changes. He believes the law will provide some unexpected economic growth.

Fireworks are permitted to be sold and used within city limits during the dates provided by the law: from June 1 to July 8 and from Dec. 10 to Jan. 3. Times for firework use is limited to 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. on those dates except for certain dates. They can be used from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. on July 4 and the weekends immediately before and after the holiday. On Dec. 31, they are allowed from 9 a.m. to 12:30 a.m. the following day and from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. the weekends before and after New Year’s Eve.
