Several area K9 units have been making news lately, with the receipt of body armor and school locker searches. The Audubon County Sheriff’s Office reports that their K9, Axel, received a bullet and stab-proof vest thanks to a $1,050 donation by Laura and Joe Libby of Kent, Wash., who are originally from Iowa. The donation was made through a charitable organization based in Taunton, Mass. that collects funds for the canine protective gear, and Axel’s new armor is embroidered with, “This gift of protection provided by Vested Interest in K9s, Inc.” Axel joined the Audubon County Sheriff’s Office in 2015, and he and his handler, Deputy Nathan Tibbets, are certified in narcotics tracking, evidence recovery and will soon be certified in handler protection. And yesterday (Tuesday), Sac County Deputy Matt Biede and his partner, K9 Toby, were at the OABCIG middle school building in Odebolt to conduct locker searches. They were both happy to report that nothing was found during the searches, which are a part of the partnership between county law enforcement and their school districts to promote safe and healthy learning environments. Photos of all the officers can be found with this story on our website.
