Jefferson PD Launching Move Over Campaign

The Jefferson Police Department is launching a “Move Over” campaign in an effort to protect all law enforcement officials. The most dangerous part of any officer’s job is when they step out on the side of a road, whether it is for a traffic stop or to investigate an accident. From 2003 to 2012, nearly half of the 1,540 officers killed in the line of duty were killed in traffic-related accidents. Forty-four percent of those officers lost their lives, and from 2013 to 2015, there has been a 13 percent increase in traffic-related officer deaths. In an effort to better protect these men and women, every state has implemented “Move Over” laws, requiring drivers to move over and/or slow down when approaching stopped emergency vehicles. The problem is, seven out of 10 people don’t know about the laws. “It’s far too common,” said Jefferson Capt. Heath Enns. “These emergency personnel work in dangerous situations all the time, but drivers really increase that risk for them when they zoom by and ignore the flashing lights—and the law.” Capt. Enns stressed the meaning behind this national campaign, saying this is not just an optional courtesy, “Move Over, It’s the Law.”
