Jefferson Man Pleads Guilty To Three Charges In Deer Hunt

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources is reporting that on March 9, 41-year-old Brett Cranston of Jefferson plead guilty to three charges related to the illegal taking of deer during the first shotgun deer season in Greene County. He was charged with trespassing while hunting, using a motor vehicle to hunt deer and shooting within 200 yards of a residence. The investigation into the poaching incident began when State Conservation Officer, Dan Pauley, was notified about an individual trespassing while hunting deer on Dec. 11, 2016. The next day, Pauley and Officer Jeremy King met with Cranston and learned he had spotted the deer about one mile west of Highway 4, six miles south of Jefferson. He fired and then began following it on county roads, stopping occasionally to shoot. The nine-mile chase ended in a corn field about two-and-a-half miles southeast of Cooper. Cranston’s hunting privileges have been suspended for one year, he had to forfeit his shotgun and the buck deer, he has been fined in excess of $660 and has been assessed $8,000 in liquidated damages. Forty-two-year-old Jeramiah Pedersen of Grand Junction has plead guilty to not having a hunting license and trespassing while deer hunting in his assistance with the pursuit. Pedersen was fined $416.
