Jefferson Man Indicted on Federal Federal Firearms Charges

A Jefferson man has been indicted on three counts of being an unlawful user of controlled substances in possession of a firearm and two counts of possession of a sawed-off shotgun. On Friday, May 12, 36-year-old Tyson James Ruth appeared in federal court on the charges. United States Chief Magistrate Judge, Helen C. Adams, ordered Ruth be held pending trial in the matter. According to United States Attorney, Kevin E. VanderSchel, Ruth was found to be in possession of two sawed-off shotguns as well as a revolver, a pistol and a Mini-14 semi-automatic rifle in December of 2016. Ruth’s trial is currently scheduled for July 3 at the Des Moines Federal Courthouse. Each count is subject to a maximum of 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. The Carroll and Jefferson Police Departments and the department of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) worked together on the investigation.
