Jefferson Man Averts Disaster By Escorting Senior Woman From Fire

A Jefferson man helped save a senior woman by entering her home and informing her the upstairs bedroom was on fire. On Saturday, April 16 at approximately 9:21 p.m., the Jefferson Police Department received a call from Brandon Mitchell to report he was seeing open flames through a window at 502 North Maple Street. When officers arrived on scene, Mitchell and the resident, Lois Wistenberg, were safely outside. According to Captain Heath Enns, Mitchell went into the home to the sounds of fire alarms, but Wistenberg did not seem to be aware of the fire. Mitchell escorted her from the building and waited with her until authorities arrived on scene. The Jefferson Fire Department extinguished the bedroom fire within an hour, and the blaze did not spread beyond the room. It was determined to have been started by an overloaded electrical drop cord. No injuries were reported during the incident. The Iowa State Patrol assisted at the scene.
