Iowa DNR Reports On 2016 Deer Harvest

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is reporting that the 2016 deer harvest surpassed the 100,000 mark, fell short of previous seasons, but is a positive indicator of stability. Just shy of 101,400 deer were harvested, which is 3,000 fewer than 2015 and nearly identical to that reported in 2014. “This harvest is consistent with our management goals and is indicative of a stable deer population,” said Tyler Harms, wildlife researcher. One possible reason for the decreased number is the warmer weather hunters encountered in the early deer season. The DNR has been working with the state legislature and stakeholders to develop a task force to manage deer populations. They meet annual to monitor and make adjustments in response to varying conditions with a goal of producing a harvest of between 100,000 to 120,000 deer each year.
