Iowa Attorney General Joins In DACA Federal Lawsuit

Iowa Attorney General, Tom Miller, has joined 15 other state attorneys general in a federal lawsuit challenging President Donald Trump’s order to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA). Miller says DACA, which protects those brought to the United States illegally as children, has protected nearly 2,800 Iowans, who grew up following the rules and have become a part of the fabric of the state. “Our lawsuit alleges the Trump administration’s action to dismantle DACA violates people’s due process, denies them equal protection under our constitution and causes ‘immediate harm’ to those whom DACA is intended to protect,” Miller says. The lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York, asks that the president’s DACA memo be declared unconstitutional and unlawful and to enjoin the administration from enforcement. As of March 31, the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) reported the approval of 2,798 initial DACA applications and 2,780 renewals in Iowa.
