Harlan Pedestrian Killed Thanksgiving Day

A pedestrian was struck and killed while walking along Highway 59 on Thanksgiving Day. The Iowa State Patrol responded to the scene south of Harlan near 700th Street at approximately 5:52 a.m. A 2005 Chevrolet Trailblazer, driven by 20-year-old Kourtnie Birgenheier of Harlan, was southbound on 59 and was passing a pickup pulling a trailer that was also traveling southbound. While in the process of passing, Birgenheier struck 50-year-old Patsey Ann Maria Nuzum of Harlan, who was walking south in the northbound lane of Highway 59. After the impact, the Trailblazer came to a stop on the east shoulder and Nuzum was thrown into the east ditch. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
