The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is investigating the Saturday drowning death of a Grimes man at Lake Panorama in Guthrie County. At approximately 11 a.m. Saturday, they received a report that 19-year-old Ashton Maier was kayaking with friends when he somehow exited the kayak and went under the water. He did not resurface for quite some time, and when he was found by bystanders, they performed CPR until paramedics arrived. Maier was airlifted to Mercy Hospital in Des Moines, where he died Saturday evening. When Maier was found, he was not wearing a personal floatation device, however one was in his kayak. The DNR is urging everyone to wear their personal floatation devices anytime they are on the water.
