Great Places Designations Applications Open To Iowa Communities And Places Of Interest

The Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs is seeking applications for Iowa Great Place designations. Since its inception in 2005, the program has designated 41 Iowa Great Places and recognizes communities that enhance local places while maintaining their unique character. Coon Rapids, the Danish Villages at Elk Horn and Kimballton, Manning and the Racoon River Valley Trail have all been designated Iowa Great Places, with the Danish Villages receiving a grant for Jen Jensen Park in the amount of $650,000 in fiscal year 2014. These designations last for five years and provide an opportunity to receive funding for related vertical-infrastructure projects over the course of that five-year-period. Applications are due by May 1, and the Citizens Advisory Board will be looking for community development plans that exemplify bold thinking and innovation, foster a sense of place and identity and demonstrate a commitment to a community’s overall vitality and quality of life. More information and applications can be found through the contact points listed below.
