Grand Champion Steer From Vail Brings Top Dollar At Governor’s Charity Steer Show

The overall grand champion steer at the Governor’s Charity Steer Show at the Iowa State Fair was raised by Cody Von Glan of Vail. The steer, “Smokin’ Willie,” was shown by Gov. Kim Reynolds, and it raised $18,500 for the benefit of Iowa’s Ronald McDonald House Charity. The 35th annual event broke records, raising more than $274,000 overall for the benefit of the Ronald McDonald houses in Des Moines, Iowa City and Sioux City. The houses, which are all located near hospitals, provide a home away from home for families of seriously ill children. To date, the Governor’s Charity Steer Show has raised more than $3.2 million for the Ronald McDonald House of Iowa. Other area steers sold at the charity auction include: Scooter, raised by Makia Smith of Charter Oak and shown by Lt. Gov. Adam Gregg, sold for $11,163; Big Kenny, raised by Allyssa Obrecht of Harlan and shown by Mike Pearson of Market to Market, sold for $5,000; and Mc”Muff”in, raised by Aiden Alt of Audubon and shown by Logan Kinyon, Miss Rodeo Iowa 2017, sold for $6,000.
