Give This Year, But Do Your Homework

This is the time of year to think of others and to give generously, but Attorney General, Tom Miller, wants everyone to do so wisely. He says that it is best to check out the charitable organization of your choice before giving, and he offers up some dos and don’ts for the season. If not familiar with the organizations name, do your research, don’t be pressured into donating to something you are not familiar with because of an emotional appeal. Find out what the organization clams to do and how much of your donation will go to administrative costs or professional fundraisers. It is a red flag if the solicitor refuses to send written details about their organization or cause, and it is a good practice to see how charity watchdogs rate the organization. There are links to a variety of watchdog groups below. Once you have cleared the organization, be sure to ask for a printed record of the donation for tax purposes and pay by check or credit card for added security. Do not send cash, use a debit card or provide bank account information. The bottom line is to give, but give wisely this holiday season to a charity you are sure will be living up to their promised mission.
