Four Area Projects Receive Nearly $100,000 To Preserve And Restore Historical Sites

Four area historical sites have been selected to receive nearly $100,000 in grants from the Iowa State Historical Society to preserve and maintain a variety of historical pieces. Whiterock Conservancy, in Coon Rapids; the Museum of Danish America, in Elk Horn; the Buena Vista University (BVU) Archives, in Storm Lake; and the Ida Grove Public Library were all selected under the Historical Resource Development Program. Whiterock Conservancy will use its $39,122 grant to address structural issues facing the historic Garst farmstead and restore its many timeworn areas. Forty-three-thousand dollars will be used by the Danish Museum to create a two-year effort to consolidate its two collections and reappraise their value. Ida Grove Public Library received $3,400 to convert the 2004-2015 editions of the Ida County Courier and digitize early records from the Ida County Era Record and Ida County Pioneer. The $10,411 grant to BVU will also be used to microfilm and digitize the university’s complete collection of campus student publications. Combined with 23 other projects, the State Historical Society has awarded more than $500,000 in 25 different communities. A link to the full list of funded projects can be found included below this story.
