Five Tenants Temporarily Displaced After Fire At Fairview Apartments Thursday Night

Five tenants of Fairview Village Apartments have been displaced after a kitchen fire in one unit. The Carroll Fire Department responded to apartment D-4 at 526 East 18th Street at approximately 9:38 p.m. last (Thursday) night to find a well-established fire in the kitchen area. There was heavy smoke and heat damage to the residence, and the remainder of the building suffered light to moderate smoke and water damage. According to Chief Greg Schreck, water damage was confined mainly to the apartment where the fire originated and the apartment below. An initial investigation has determined food left unattended on the cooktop was most likely the cause of the blaze. The tenant, Louis Paige, had been preparing a meal and had apparently fallen asleep in the living room. The pan of food caught fire, which spread to the kitchen cabinets. A neighbor alerted Paige of the fire and then activated the building’s fire alarm. No injuries were reported, but there is an estimated $55,000 in fire, heat, smoke and water damage to the structure. Firefighters were at the scene for two hours venting smoke and guarding against flare-ups.
