Farmers Catch A Break With The Weather And Make Strides In Harvest Over The Last Week

For the first time in quite a while, farmers across the state had the majority of the past week to get into the fields and make progress with this year’s harvest. The weekly Iowa Crop Progress and Condition report says farmers had 5.4 days suitable for field work, with nearly 45 percent of the corn crop and about 83 percent of the soybean crop now out of the fields. Mike Naig, Iowa Deputy Secretary of Agriculture, says farmers have made good progress, combining over 20 percent of the state’s corn and soybean crops in a single week. This, however, is still nearly two weeks behind the five-year average for corn and six days behind the average for soybeans. Corn yields in several areas are being reported higher than expected and the corn is rated at 66 percent good to excellent.
