Everyone Asked To Pause And Remember Those Touched By Cancer At Carroll County Relay For Life Friday

The 2017 American Cancer Society (ACS) Carroll County Relay for Life co-chairs, Teresa and Brandon Vonnahme and Erin and Kevin Milligan, say this year’s Relay is a “don’t miss” celebration with a full schedule of family-friendly activities. Erin Milligan says they have added something new for children this year.

As the gates open at noon this Friday, June 23, at the Carrol Athletic Field on Grant Road, organizers ask everyone throughout the County to take a break from their busy schedule, pause and remember the lives of friends and family members touched by cancer. After that, everyone is invited to participate in the many different events and activities, including what Milligan describes as a very unique way to give.

The opening ceremony will begin at noon on Friday and will be broadcast live on 1380 KCIM. Teresa Vonnahme says there will be organizers present earlier than that to help the teams get in and get set up.

Throughout the afternoon, sister stations, 106.7 KIKD and 93.7 KKRL, will bring live reports from the field during the Relay scavenger hunt, the silent auction, yard games and the themed laps; which this year include a t-shirt lap, a sunglasses lap and a super hero and princess lap. There will be music and food served throughout the day and everyone is invited to Celebrate, Remember and Fight Back during the remembrance ceremony at 7:30 p.m. and the luminaria lighting and lap that will kick-off at 9 p.m. ACS Relay Specialist, Kim Durst, says Carroll County has been recognized as one of the top three Counties in the nation for 15 years, and that over the past 21 years of the annual event, it is the volunteers that have brought about this recognition.

HONORING CANCER SURVIVORS
Cancer survivors are invited to join fellow survivors, families, and friends for a day to Celebrate, Remember, and Fight Back. Survivors’ are invited to register at the Survivor Registration and receive a 2017 Survivor pin, a 2017 Survivor T-shirt, and sash. Valet parking and wheelchairs will also be available for anyone needing assistance. The Survivors’ Supper and Fellowship is planned at 5:00 – 6:30 pm at the Carroll Rec Center, with the Celebrate and Remember Ceremony at 7:30 pm, and the Survivors’ and Caregivers’ Laps to follow.

CELEBRATE THE MEMORIES – LUMINARIA LIGHTING AND REFLECTION LAP
Luminaria provide a very personal way to honor survivors of cancer, to remember those who have lost their battle against cancer, or to recognize anyone who has been instrumental in the fight against cancer. These luminaria will be lighted at dusk and illuminate the stadium to remind everyone of the importance of their contributions in the lives of those affected by cancer. Luminaria donations may be made in advance or at the event.

A Reflection Lap is planned in conjunction with the luminary lighting. The Reflection Lap offers all Relay participants the opportunity to reflect, to remember and to celebrate those who have lost their battle with cancer. Immediately following the lighting and Reflection Lap, area dance team members will perform a Luminary Dance to close the lighting ceremony.

LUMINARY 5K RUN/WALK
A noncompetitive 5K Walk/Run around the track by the light of the luminaries will conclude the evening’s activities at the stadium. A free-will donation qualifies participants for an event t-shirt. Contact Julie Pietig at 712-830-9214 to register or sign up at the Relay For Life.

SILENT AUCTION
The Silent Auction is open to everyone and the money raised through the auction will be credited to the team or individual who donated the auction item. Auction items will be accepted at the Relay starting at 10 am. Contact Calee Hoffmann at hoffcalee@gmail.com or call 712-210-1307 for more information.
