EAB Continues To Spread Across Iowa. 52 Counties Now Confirmed Infested

The tree pest, Emerald Ash Borer (EAB), has now been confirmed in 52 of Iowa’s 99 counties after being located in Ringgold County near the Missouri border. A recent EAB infestation was discovered from a rural site just west of Tingley. “We are already up to 13 new counties confirmed with EAB this year,” says Mike Kintner, Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship EAB and gypsy moth coordinator. “As we continue to track EAB’s spread across the state, people are encouraged to report suspect trees in counties that have not yet been declared [EAB] positive.” EAB-infested trees can be identified by branch dieback in the upper portion of the tree, water sprouts along the trunk and main branches, vertical bark splits, D-shaped emergence holes and S-shaped tunneling under bark. EAB first appeared in Iowa in 2010 in Allamakee County and has spread to over half the state in the seven years since.
