Deer Hunters Now Allowed To Use Straight-Wall Cartridges While Hunting

Deer hunters in Iowa will now be allowed to hunt with a new type of firearm, rifles which shoot straight-walled cartridges. Previously, only 20 gauge shotgun slugs or larger and certain pistol calibers were permitted to be used to harvest deer. The regulations were changed on April 13 when Governor Terry Branstad signed HF 475 to allow lower recoil options for hunters of all ages. A straight-wall cartridge is defined by not having any tapering, also called a shoulder, which generates higher velocity projectiles when fired. Individuals caught hunting with a rifle capable of firing ammunition not on the approved list face a $250 fine and two-year hunting suspension. A link to the approved cartridges can be found included with this story on our website.
