Republican 4th District Congressman, Steve King, has responded to the Iraqi Kurds participation in the non-binding referendum that will determine whether the Kurdistani Region of Northern Iraq should become and independent country. King says he hopes they have seized this historic opportunity for self-determination. “The Kurdish fighting force, the Peshmerga, have been effective in the fight against the radical Islamic terrorists that comprise the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS),” King says. “The Kurds are proud, independent people who have long been persecuted and who have earned the right to form an independent state.” King adds they would be a long-term ally of the U.S. and could be called upon to protect the rights of religious minorities if they choose independence.
