Sac City officials were informed this week that the next time the city’s water tower gets repainted it could cost them a substantial amount more. City Administrator, Jamie Lawrence, says the paint on the tower is becoming thin and exposing the layers underneath.
Sac City typically repaints the water tower about once per decade. The most recent coat was applied just over one year ago. It could cost an additional $100,000 to tent and remove the lead paint underneath. Lawrence wants to ensure residents that the paint is on the exterior of the tower and poses no risk to residents.
Lawrence adds it is good the city knows of the problem now rather than it become an unexpected cost in the future. If the city follows its regular schedule for tower painting, it should take place in late 2016 or early 2017.
