Churdan Family To Be Recognized For The 2017 Way We Live Award At The Iowa State Fair

A Churdan family is one of six being recognized as a 2017 Way We Live award winner at the Iowa State Fair tomorrow (Wednesday). Dennis and Karen Fay will receive their award at 11:15 a.m. in the Paul R. Knapp Animal Learning Center. The Fays have been farming for nearly 60 years. Their home farm started in 1960 and is a few miles northeast of Lohrville in Calhoun County. Dennis and Fay no longer live on the farm, but he still heads out every day to manage his sow, corn and soybean operation with the help of his children and grandchildren. Dennis says the have taken a variety of career paths, but they always come back to lend a hand at the farm.

Dennis says he had no idea they were even eligible for the award. He credits his granddaughter for submitting the application.

Five other families were recognized: the Hingtgens of Bellevue, the Holsts of Eldridge, the Boyers of Welson, the Meyers of West Liberty and the Hansens of Dallas Center. Each family receives a $250 prize, complimentary admission tickets and a recognition ceremony. The Way We Live Award was started in 2009 and has recognized 54 Iowa farm families for their dedication to agriculture.
