Chantelle Grove’s Top Stories Of 2016 (5 to 1)

We continue our look at stories of 2016 as News Director, Chantelle Grove reports on her top five picks.

5.  I will never forget the distinct honor of meeting Brittany Klocke, a senior at Kuemper High School who chose to skip her own prom to make a five hour trip to Wisconsin to attend a special-needs prom for a 14-year-old young man. This touching story that made national headlines hit number five on my list. (Brittany Klocke Story)

4.  Another story that made headlines around the state was one that had a lot of individuals on the edge of their seat for hours. A standoff between a distraught man with a gun and law enforcement officials closed down a section of Highway 30 on the east side of Carroll while officials tried to talk down the young man. Fortunately for everyone involved, this story ended without anyone being hurt. (Standoff Story)

3.  The community of Carroll has said goodbye to several key people over course of the past year, and my number three pick is a compilation of the retirements from local government and city and county service that brought about major change. Doug Bass, Carroll County Sheriff, who served the people of the county for 43 years, 24 of those as Sheriff, retired in March. (Bass Retirement)  Long-time Carroll City Manager, Gerald Clausen, retired in July of this year after 22 years of service. (Clausen Retirement)  And, after eight years as a Carroll County Supervisor, Mark Beardmore announced he would not be running for another term in the fifth-district seat.  (Beardmore Retirement)

2.  For over a decade, the community of Carroll has been unable to come to a consensus on a solution for expansion of the Carroll Public Library. The generosity of the Moehn and Milligan families with a million-dollar donation of the Commercial Savings Bank building on North Adams Street has made the most headway in bringing an expansion to reality than any other measure over the past 10 plus years. (Bank Donation)

1.  And there is no disputing that the number one story to come out of the Carroll area in the past year has been a criminal story to rival that of the marker bandits from 2009, when on May 18, 29-year-old Jordan Kajewski of Carroll got stuck in the chimney at the Carroll Can Redemption Center overnight. And if the excuse that he got stuck playing hide-and-seek wasn’t strange enough, being completely naked took this story over the edge. (Man Stuck In Chimney)
