Carroll Public Library Hosts MakerSpace Technology Demo Wednesday

The Carroll Public Library is hosting a technology showcase from a high-tech retail firm tomorrow (Wednesday) and patrons have the opportunity to test out a number of machines being brought. Many libraries across the country are beginning to implement “MakerSpaces” into their designs, including Carroll’s library. These are spaces dedicated for people to explore and innovate in their fields of interest.  Library Director, Rachel Van Erdewyk, says they are trying to get a feel for what patrons would want in their MakerSpace.

The company bringing the equipment, Aidex of Omaha, specializes in educational technology. Heat presses, 3D printers, computer-controlled laser cutting machines and a CNC unit will be available from noon until 7 p.m. at the library for the public to experience. A UV printer will also be on hand. Van Erdewyk says she heard of an example from the rep showing the only limitations on this equipment is size and imagination.

People can reserve a time for each piece of equipment or just walk in. Van Erdewyk says it is hard to guess which technology will be in highest demand but suspects it will be the UV printer.

These machines can cost up to $25,000 if purchased on an individual basis, and having them in the new library would allow access to advanced technologies for all income-levels. The library will have a limited amount of materials for people to try out and invites patrons to bring in their own items. Reservations can be made by contacting the library at 792-3432
