Carroll Man Pleads Guilty To Third-Degree Sexual Abuse

A 39-year-old Carroll man was sentenced to up to 10 years in prison on Wednesday after pleading guilty to sexually abusing a child 13 years old or younger. Michael James Goodwin made the plea in Carroll County District Court and also waived a presentencing investigation and requested immediate sentencing. Goodwin was arrested in February of this year and charged with sex abuse in the third degree for inappropriate contact with the minor between Aug. 1, 2012 and June 1, 2013. Judge Gary McMinimee added a special sentence in this case, ordering that Goodwin be under supervision, “as if on parole,” for the rest of his life. Goodwin was also ordered to pay a fine of $1,000, pecuniary damages to the victim and is not allowed to have any contact with the victim for five years. Goodwin will also be required to register as a sex offender in each county of residence or employment. He will be given credit for time served.
