Carroll Man Arrested On Drug Charges After Causing Traffic Accident Near Audubon

A Carroll man has been arrested in Audubon County on drug charges after causing an estimated $11,000 in damages in a non-injury traffic accident. At approximately 2:15 p.m. Thursday afternoon, the Audubon County Sheriff’s Office responded to reports of an accident on Highway 71 about five miles north of Audubon near the intersection with 150th Street. According to authorities, 25-year-old Nicholaus Allen Augustus, of Carroll, was traveling southbound in a 2011 Chevrolet Colorado on Highway 71 and attempted to pass a southbound 2014 Chevrolet Silverado, driven by 79-year-old Gareth Paul Christensen, of Audubon. While attempting to return to his lane, Augustus collided with the front driver’s-side panel of Christensen’s truck and entered the west ditch, struck a utility pole and came to a rest in a field. When deputies arrived on scene they located suspected narcotics in Augustus’ vehicle. Augustus was arrested and charged with possession of methamphetamine, possession of drug paraphernalia, carrying weapons, no insurance, no driver’s license and unsafe passing. He remains in custody at the Audubon County Jail on a $2,000 bond. Damages to the Augustus vehicle were estimated at $10,000 and $1,000 to the Christensen vehicle. Damage was also reported to the utility pole and field.
