Carroll County Supervisors Approve City’s Trail Connector Plans

Carroll Parks and Recreation Director, Jack Wardell, Public Works Director, Randy Krauel, and Director of Carroll County Conservation, Jason Christensen, all spoke to the Carroll County Board of Supervisors about connecting the Sauk Rail Trail with Whitney Street to bring the trail to the downtown area. Wardell explained the logistics of the connector as it is laid out in the trail’s master plan.

The area in question at the south dead end of Whitney Street is a greenspace that is owned by the county as right-of-way. There is one tree in that area that is in bad shape that would be removed to make room for the connector. Though the work is going to be done on county property, the entire expense for the clearing, grading, construction and upkeep of that portion would be the responsibility of the city. Christensen said he had no concerns from his end on the project.

Krauel explained that the city has put a lot of work into development of this city trail connector that will join to the 10-foot wide trail segments being built to travel west on Third Street and then north on Carroll Street.

The supervisors unanimously agreed to grant permission for the City of Carroll to build the Sauk Rail Trail connection under the agreement that it will be totally at the city’s expense for construction and upkeep.
