The first thing that comes to mind for many Americans on Memorial Day is the sight of our nation’s flag at cemeteries across the country, and the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) posts in Carroll are looking for a hand in setting up their displays for the holiday. On Friday, May 26 at 5 p.m., small flags will be placed on all veterans’ graves by the Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts, and any adult volunteers interested in helping are asked to meet at the north gate to the Carroll City Cemetery. The harder task falls on Memorial Day, Monday May, 29, where the posts’ members set up nearly 600 flags and poles. VFW Quartermaster, Walter Rose, says ending the day is the toughest part.
Volunteers are asked to meet at 6 a.m. Monday morning to aid the effort. He says it is getting tougher every year for them to get the job done.
Memorial Day originated to honor those who died while serving in the military, and Rose says veterans appreciate the support from the public.
Volunteers do not need to register to assist in preparations or take-downs. Services at the Carroll City Cemetery begin at 10:30 a.m. Memorial Day morning with a parade from 1st Street and Main Street to the cemetery and end at noon. The American Legion will host an open house following the service until 1:30 p.m. with sandwiches, chips and drinks.
