Best Talks To Constituents About Handheld Device Bill Heading To House And Senate Debate

A bill making use of handheld devices illegal on Iowa’s roadways has passed through the House Transportation Committee and is now ready to be opened to debate in the Iowa House and Senate. At a recent legislative forum, 12th District Republican House Representative, Brian Best, told the full house gathered that he supports this bill.

Best said one of the major issues with the delays in passing the bill is the question of where to draw the line in what actions should be considered illegal.

Deb Julich, with the Carroll County Huddle, asked about House File 60 and the proposed fine of only $30.

Best agreed that $30 was not likely enough of a deterrent. The House Transportation Committee voted Wednesday to add a one-year grace period to the bill so that offenders would receive warning tickets only for the first year the legislation was enacted.
