Bacon Lovers Unite At The 2017 ISU Bacon Expo Saturday In Ames

For the fifth year, an annual event that is near and dear to bacon lovers will be held this Saturday, Oct. 7. The Iowa State University (ISU) Bacon Expo 2017 will run from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Hansen Agricultural Student Learning Center on the ISU campus, and this year’s theme is Bacon Hero. President of this student-led event, Megan Anderson, says the primary focus of the annual celebration of all things bacon is to educate consumers about where their food comes from and what agriculture really means.

And while attendees are munching on all the different bacon-themed culinary treats, they will be able to take in some entertainment and are invited to help in honoring Eric Hoiberg, a sociology professor at ISU and the father of one of the university’s and Ames’ most memorable figures, Fred Hoiberg. A former Iowa State shooting guard and head coach for the ISU men’s basketball team from 2010 to 2015, Fred Hoiberg is now the head coach of the Chicago Bulls. He was so popular within the community, he was nicknamed “The Mayor” after receiving write-in votes during a 1993 mayoral race in Ames. Anderson says the honoring of his father is something new to the expo.

The Bacon Hero theme will include superhero activities from education to live entertainment. Each year, the Bacon Expo gives something back to their community, and this year, the leftover bacon will be donated to Food First of Ames and all proceeds raised will go to the Make-A-Wish Foundation. More than 1,200 people attended last year’s event. More information about the expo and details on how to get tickets can be found through the following links.
