Area Resident Falls Victim To Social Security Scam

An area resident has fallen victim to a phone scam that promised an increase to Social Security income. Authorities are reporting that the caller said all they needed was a little bit of personal and banking information and they would be able to increase the subject’s monthly benefit by two and a half percent. The subject supplied the information before realizing it was a scam call. She is currently working with her bank to make changes to her accounts and to monitor her credit and bank activity. Authorities remind everyone to never give out personal or banking information over the phone. Government agencies like the IRS or the Social Security Administration said they want to make it perfectly clear that they will never ask for that type of information in a phone call or email. They advise everyone to hang up or ignore the email message and contact their offices by using the contact information listed below.
