Area Fire Departments Receive Matching Grants From Iowa DNR

The Rockwell City, Schleswig and Stuart Fire Departments were among 92 others receiving more than $220,000 in Volunteer Fire Assistance (VFA) grants from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR). These 50 percent cost-share grants are provided to aid the departments in their efforts in protecting Iowans and their property from wildfires. The VFA program, authorized by the 1990 Farm Bill, provides financial, technical and other assistance through the state forestry agencies to organize, equip and train small, local fire departments in rural communities with populations under 10,000. The Rockwell City Department was awarded $820 and the Schleswig Department received $3,500. Stuart Fire in Guthrie County was granted $1,637. Other area departments receiving funding include Atlantic, Alta and Ida Grove, each awarded $3,500.
