Ar-We-Va Students Will Be Welcomed Back To School By Familiar Faces

It will be a full day of school for students in the Ar-We-Va Community School District on Wednesday Aug. 23, with classes from 7:55 a.m. to 3:25 p.m. for elementary kids and from 8 a.m. to 3:31 p.m. for all middle and high school students. Superintendent, Jeff Kruse, says returning students are going to see some nice improvements to the Westside gymnasium.

Kruse is now entering into his second year of sharing his position, but this year he is only splitting his time between two school districts, Ar-We-Va and South Central Calhoun. He will be spending 20 percent of his time at Ar-We-Va and 80 percent at South Central Calhoun. He is pleased to say that nearly all of last year’s staff is returning, with only one change being made in the cheerleader instructor position. High school students will also be entering into the second year of the partial-day sharing with Carroll, which Kruse says has worked well for both districts and will remain the same as last year. District voters will be casting their ballots on two different issues in the upcoming school board election on Sept. 12. In addition to the election of school board members, the school’s Physical Plant and Equipment Levy (PPEL) will be up for renewal.

The district is currently collecting $1.67 per $1,000 of assessed home value, with 33 cents of that approved by the school board and the remaining $1.34 voted on by registered voters living within the school district. There are two open seats on the board this year, but only one candidate, incumbent Danielle Schrad, has filed paperwork to run. Kruse says if there are write-ins for the other open seat, and if that write in accepts the position, it will be filled. If not, the board will appoint someone until the next election. But when it comes to next week and the beginning of the school year, Kruse says he believes everyone is excited to be coming back.

“Meet the Rockets” night for the introduction of all junior high and high school athletes is Thursday, Aug. 17. The elementary school open house, sixth-grade orientation and the eighth-grade parent/student technology review will all take place on Aug. 22. Stay tuned as we will continue to bring you back-to-school features on area districts in upcoming broadcasts.
