Winter Brings Restrictions For Manure Applications

For some livestock producers, manure applications are limited after Dec. 21, but all livestock and poultry producers can benefit by avoiding manure application on snow-covered ground. Snow can prevent nutrients from reaching the soil and running off when the snow melts. Except in emergencies, state law limited liquid manure application from Dec. 21 to April 1 on snow-covered ground unless manure can be properly injected or incorporated. If a producer needs to perform an application during that time, they are required to call the local DNR field offices for approval.
